Visual Feature Integration in a World of Objects

چکیده

Throughout the history of psychology, the study of perception has been marked by a conflict between analytic and holistic views. According to the analytic view, object recognition involves analysis of the visual input of stimulus features. A stimulus is recognized to the extent that it contains the appropriate features and these features are registered by the visual system. Early examples of the analytic approach include the British empiricists and the structuralists. The holistic view, described by the Gestalt school, claims that recognition involves more than analysis of a stimulus into parts. According to this view, a collection of features is not sufficient for object recognition. These apparently conflicting views lead to the following question: Do we recognize a cherry because we register the features round and red, or is a cherry more than an assortment of features? In studying the perceptual phenomenon of illusory conjunctions, my colleagues and I have found that

Transsaccadic integration and perceptual continuity.

Our perception of the visual world seems continuous despite the fact that visual information is sampled in discrete fixations interrupted by saccadic eye movements. Two new behavioral studies show that perceptual continuity may be partly achieved by combining feature information of saccade target objects across saccades in a close-to-statistically optimal fashion.

A Formal Theory of Feature Binding in Object Perception

Visual objects are perceived correctly only if their features are identified and then bound together. Illusory conjunctions result when feature identification is correct but an error occurs during feature binding. A new model is proposed that assumes feature binding errors occur because of uncertainty about the location of visual features. This model accounted for data from 2 new experiments be...

Multisensor Integration for Scene Classifiction: An Experiment in Human Form Detection

This paper presents a system for classiication of scenes using a multisensor integration framework. Indoor scenes are imaged using a visual and an infrared sensor and the images processed in three stages to perform classiication of sensed objects into two classes: human and background. Finally, information from individual classiiers is integrated in order to obtain an improved classiication per...

Objective: Movement is essential for learning. Previous studies explored the relationship between movement and Visual Motor Integration, however, evidence regarding the specific sport skills related to visual motor integration is lacking. Therefore, the purpose current study was the effect of specific sport skills on visual-motor integration in children with motor disability. Method: Participa...

Edge-Projected Integration of Image and Model Cues for Robust Model-Based Object Tracking

A real-world limitation of visual servoing approaches is the sensitivity of visual tracking to varying ambient conditions and background clutter. The authors present a model-based vision framework to improve the robustness of edge-based feature tracking. Lines and ellipses are tracked using edge-projected integration of cues (EPIC). EPIC uses cues in regions delineated by edges that are defined...
